Promita Karfa is a contemporary dancer and movement artist based in Kolkata, whose practice delicately weaves together science, mythology, and embodied inquiry. With a foundation in Media Science from Techno India, Salt Lake, her artistic journey reflects a deep engagement with both intellectual and intuitive forms of expression.
She began her training in Odissi at the age of nine under Guru Shib Narayan Banerjee, cultivating a strong grounding in classical discipline and aesthetics. In 2017, she transitioned into contemporary dance under the mentorship of Sudarshan Chakravarty at Sapphire Creations Dance Company, where she continues to evolve as a repertory member. In 2025, she further deepened her connection to classical traditions by pursuing advanced Odissi training under Guru Bijayini Satpathy.

Promita’s work resides at the intersection of the physical and the philosophical—drawing inspiration from Indian scriptures, scientific thought, and the metaphysical body. Her choreographic voice is informed by extensive training through national and international workshops and residencies with renowned artists including Michael Casanovas, Jacek Luminski, Roger Sinha, Ronita Mookerji, Parth Bharadwaj, and Raziman Sarbini.
Her performance journey spans prestigious festivals and global platforms, including ICCR, TARI 2019, and international tours across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Poland with Sapphire Creations. She was a key contributor to the Indo-Polish collaboration Roots of Dance, and has continued to engage in cross-cultural artistic dialogues, including What I Have Not Seen Before (2024) choreographed by Jacek Luminski.

In 2022, she received the Jury Special Mention at the Prakriti Excellence in Contemporary Dance Awards. Her choreographic works include the experimental duet Aki Buki (co-created with Abrar Saqib) and her solo Tanmantra, which premiered at the Serendipity Arts Festival.
Promita has also represented India on significant global platforms, including the G20 Summit (2023) and an international performance tour to Tajikistan under the Ministry of External Affairs. Her recent engagement with the CP³ (Certificate Programme for Critical Practice in Contemporary Performance) reflects her ongoing commitment to deepening her artistic and critical practice.

Through her work, Promita continues to explore dance as a space of inquiry, transformation, and resonance—where the body becomes both a vessel of tradition and a site of contemporary thought.
